The reduction gear unit comprises a toothed plate wheel in bearings on an axis inclined to those of the two shafts. This meshes with a crown gearwheel and has one tooth more or less than the latter. There can be a stationary supporting gear ring coaxial to and enclosing the gearwheel. This has the same number of teeth as the plate wheel and prevents it from rotating. Alternatively the plate wheel can be prevented from turning by a stationary spring component, typically a plate spring. The design gives a large reduction ratio.
