The grinding machine head is supported by air bearings, having a shaft running in a cylindrical sleeve (2) in two load bearings and a double-acting thrust bearing (3). Each load bearing (1) is formed by bushes (5) mounted in the sleeve and with two rows of ports (a) round the periphery. The thrust bearing comprises a disc (7) on the shaft and running in a chamber formed by two parallel plates (9) and an annular cross-member (10). Each port is formed in a brass pellet containing a filter elements of porous material, and fitted in a radial hole in the wall of the bush. The pellet bears against a shoulder holding its forward end clear of the shaft surface, and it is sealed in place by synthetic resin.
