A cigarette (30) designed to reduce the injurious effects on the smoker has one or more channels (36) through it, each formed by a tube running the length of the tobacco filled part. This tube may be round or of another cross sectional shape, e.g. triangular and size is about 0.2mm in cross section. The tube can be made of combustible or non combustible material, and may be of cellulose containing material or of metal such as aluminum, and be a good heat conductor. The diameter of the tube must not exceed 7.5 mm for a normal cigarette diameter of 8 mm. The material must not burn quicker than the tobacco. It can be used inside a filter tipped cigarette. The tobacco at the front may incorporate oxidising elements, or may be impregnated with an oxidising substance.
