Iron ores are directly reduced, by mixing the crushed ore with solid fueld and placing the mixt. in a vessel which can be closed. The fuel is ignited and air if fed into the vessel for combustion of the fuel. When the ore has been heated to the redn. temp., the flow of air is stopped and hot redn. gas is fed through the mixt. A lance is pref. fed from the top of the vessel down through the charge for supplying air, and a small amt. of fuel is located under the lance, which is slowly withdrawn upwards. The pref. plant consists of a reactor with a sealable lid contg. a lance consisting of two coaxial pipes; the outer pipe is used to supply air and then redn. gas which is extracted from the reactor via the inner pipe. The lancer is also fitted with two smaller pipes supplying fueld gas and O2. The invention uses air at the start of the process for rapid heating of the charge so productivity is increased.
