The engine has two cylinders (1, 2) with reciprocating pistons (3, 4) on either side of a regenerative heat exchanger (5). Valves (7, 9, 10, 11, 12) control the flow through the unit. A valve (6) admits hot gas from the regenerator to a gas turbine and a valve (8) admits exhaust from the turbine into the regenerator. Atmosphere air drawn in is compressed in the upper cylinder. It flows through the generator and is heated before being burnt with fuel and passing to the turbine. The turbine exhaust then flows through the regenerator to be cooled. In cooling it produces a vacuum which is used to draw atmospheric air through the turbine. This gives the turbine alternate periods of subjection to hot and cold gases.
|
