Cis,cis-cyclooctadiene-1,5(I) is polymerised in the presence of WCl6 catalyst and a cocatalyst chosen from cis, cis-cyclodecadiene-1,6 cis, trans,trans-cyclododecatriene-1,5,9, cis,cis-1,2-divinylcyclohexane and dicyclo-pentadiene opt. in the presence of a solvent pref. at -20 to +80 (10-35) degrees C. The catalyst has improved activity, solubility and selectivity. The polymers may be used as binders in coatings or a raw material for elastomeric or thermoplastic mouldings.
