<p>Thin magnetic metal films or magnetic recording materials are treated with an aq. soln. contg. phosphoric acid or a phosphate. The soln. pref. contains >=0.01 (0.05-0.5) mol/l. phosphoric acid or phosphate salt of Mn, Zn, Al, Na, K or Ca, and the protective film formed has a thickness of >=10 (20-300)Angstroms. Used for protection of recording tapes, storage discs, etc. The surface is protected against corrosion, oxidn. a and wear by the magnetic heads by a simple, economic process which does not reduce the high recording density possible in thin metal films. Abrasion of the magnetic heads is also reduced. The metal film is pref. applied by vacuum vapour, spray, ion, ionic beam, or chemical vapour phase deposition processes to a thickness of 300 Angstroms to 1 mu m. The substrate may be a non-conductor e.g. PET or 2,6-naphthalate, polyimide, PVC, cellulose triacetate, polycarbonate, glass or ceramic, or a metal, pref. Al, stainless steel or brass. Treatment is at up to 100 degrees (20-90 degrees)C for 0.3-24 h.</p> |
