Gear 43 may be driven directly by a steam turbine. Alternatively, gears 43, 44 may be driven by an electric motor via a shaft 21 and an epicyclic gear train disclosed in the main Specification, the casing of the epicyclic gear train, which is bolted to wall 32, being located in one of two positions so that either gear 43, 44 may receive drive from the gear train output shaft 27. The speed of each impeller will remain the same either when using a speed ratio of 5 : 6 and when one of the input gears receives drive from a 2-pole 50 Hz motor or when the other input gear receives drive from a 2-pole 60 Hz motor; or when using a speed ratio of 5 : 12 and when one of the input gears receives drive from a 2-pole 50 Hz motor or the other input gear receives drive from a 4-pole 60 Hz motor; or when using a gear ratio of 10 : 6 and when one input gear receives drive from a 4-pole 50 Hz motor or when the other input gear receives drive from a 2-pole 60 Hz motor; or when using a speed ratio of 10:12 and when one input gear receives drive from a 4-pole 50 Hz motor or when the other input gear receives drive from a 4-pole 60 Hz motor.</p> |
