<p>Some of the display digits have two electrodes and at least two counter electrodes arranged with digit control signals applied to them so that the digit display is activated by the coupling effect between the electrodes and counter electrodes. Two segments of the same digit lie on the same electrode, and also two segments lie on a counter electrode. The complete figure forms a figure of eight. Various combinations of segments may be activated by specific couplings so that different characters may be formed. The segments are typically liquid crystal display elements.
