Self-locking nut for sheet metal panels - has sharp corners formed by radial cuts around central hole in upper limb of U-shaped metal strip

The self locking nut is formed from a strip of metal bent to a U shape. One leg (3) of the U has a raised boss (5) with a central hole of a diameter about 5 per cent smaller than the root diameter of the screw. A radial slot in the surface of the boss (5) enables the inner edge of the hole to align itself with the thread of the screw. In addition, a number of radial cuts (8) form sharp edges which bite into the root of the thread of the screw and lock the screw in any position. A clearance hole is provided in the other leg.
