A plate shaped flat sieve element consists of an elastic material not subject to wear. Sieve opening are distributed over its surface. They are of the same or different size and shape. The element may be tensioned and/or deformed as required and may includes some form of reinforcement. A part of the sieve openings are formed as slots with several of the openings forming a row of openings with the majority of sieve openings extending in the same or a different direction in relation to the length of the sieve. The sieve element is equipped with a large number of primary sieve openings (2) of the same or varying size with if necessary a number of secondary sieve openings (3) of the same or varying size co-ordinated with them. The stay without holes remaining between the sieve opening rows provides a degree of stiffening greater by 1.3 times than a similar sizes sieve of the same material with holes of a unified shape and size.
