The cylinder head is provided with a main combustion chamber and an ignition chamber for each cylinder. The ignition chamber communicates with the main combustion chamber via a single flame channel. The ignition chamber is a thin walled heat resisting casing welded to a keeper section (7) to form an insert unit. The unit fits in a corresponding recess in the cylinder head and is secured by three equally spaced studs (9). The ignition chamber keeper part (7) also serves to hold a fuel injector, a high tension spark plug (11) and a heater plug. The heater plug acts immediately upon the ignition chamber and is temperature controlled.
