Preventing coal dust explosions in mines - using barriers contg. aq. hygroscopic salt solns. admixed with nonionic non-foaming wetting agents

Repeated coal dust explosions in mines are prevented by using water through - or release barriers filled with aq. solns. of hygroscopic salts, with further addn. of 0.1-0.5 wt.% (w.r.t. total wt. of soln.) of non-foaming, nonionic wetting agents or a mixt. Pref. wetting agents consists of >=1 alkylphenol ethyxoylate contg. >=1 short 1-5C side chains and 3-9 C2H4O adduct gps. A mixt. of short chained alkylphenol ethoxylates, (I), and nonylphenol ethoxylates, (II), may be used, provided wt. ratio (I):(II) >=1 without changing total wetting agent quantity.
