1491270 Labelling H KRONSEDER 18 Dec 1975 [20 Dec 1974] 51964/75 Heading B8F Labelling apparatus comprises a rotary label carrier 2 having a plurality of label transfer elements 4 for extracting labels from a magazine 13, a rotary labelling cylinder 7 having a plurality of label receiving elements 10 to which labels are transferred from the carrier 2, means for driving the carrier and cylinder so that the peripheral speed of the elements 4 exceeds that of the elements 10, and grippers 9 on the cylinder for engaging the labels by their leading edges on to the elements 10. In the figure, each element 4 is pivoted by cam mechanism about shaft 3 on carrier 2, so as to roll over the outermost label in the magazine after passing a gluing roller 6. The fingers 9 are operated by cam 8 and followers 18, and the labels are applied to, e.g. bottles by sponge rubber cushions 11. The cylinder and carrier drives are connected by gears 15, 16, and the peripheral spacing of the elements 4, 10 and the relative speeds of rotation are such that at closest approach as shown, the leading end of a label and element 4 register with but are moving faster than an element 10. One or more fingers 9 are within an aperture 21 in the leading end of element 4, and are operated by cam 8 to grip the label on to element 10, causing the label to adopt a stepped formation. In one embodiment, this stepped formation is caused by not closing the gripper on to element 10 until the element 10 is some four degrees past the position of closest approach shown. In another embodiment, the gap between the label leading end and element 10 at the position of closest approach is sufficient to produce the stepped formation. The radially inner face of the trailing end of each gripper is curved. |
