PROCESS FOR OBTAINING HIGH-PURITY CYCLOPENTENE

1415427 Purifying cyclopentene BAYER AG and ERDOLCHEMIE GmbH 16 Nov 1973 [17 Nov 1972] 53281/73 Heading C5E Cyclopentene is purified by distilling crude cyclopentene containing C 5 olefinic and diolefinic impurities to remove volatile components and subjecting the sump product which contains the cyclopentene to treatment with a macroporous cation exchanger in the H form. The exchanger is preferably styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer containing sulphonic acid groups. The product may be distilled in order to separate off impurities boiling at higher temperatures than cyclopentane, and/or washed with an alkali metal hydroxide solution which may contain up to 15 wt. per cent hydrazine hydrate to remove carbonyl compounds. Water may then be removed by an azeotropic distillation, pure cyclopentene being recovered as a side stream.
