The helmet has rigid inner and outer shells, between which is a shock-absorbing layer composed of tubular cavities running directly across from one rigid shell to the other, the walls of the cavities being made of a permanently-deformable rigid material. A permanently deformable material absorbs more of the force of a blow than a resistant material. The tubular cavities may form a honeycomb, whose walls may be of thin sheet metal, of plastic, of resin-impregnated cloth or card, or of polyester-resin-impregnated cloth. The rigid shells may be of metal or plastic, and may simply rest on the honeycomb core, or be fastened to it, or be fastened to each other.
|
