Electrode binders from naphtha steam cracking residues - contg. added aromatic extract

Prodn. of binders for electrometallurgical electrodes is carried out according to the Parent Patent by distilling residues from the steam cracking of naphtha and thermally ageing the resulting pitch. The modification lies in the addn. of an aromatic extract to the initial steam-cracking residue and/or to the final binder. The aromatic extract is obtained by solvent extraction of lubricating-range vacuum distillates. Addn. of the aromatic extract reduces the viscosity of the binder (e.g. from >4000 to 1500-3000 cP at 160 degrees C.).
