The DC supply apparatus which, in particular, supplies an inductive load has a line-commutated fully-controlled thyristor bridge and an inductor (3) in the DC circuit. In order to be able to switch off the load current very quickly as a function of one criterion, an additional thyristor (8) is provided, which is connected in parallel with the load (4) and takes over the load current if a load-dependant triggering signal occurs. This triggering signal at the same time causes the thyristor bridge (1) to change over into the invertor mode. As a result of this arrangement, the load is immediately short-circuited and the inductive energy in the DC circuit is supplied back into the AC power supply. The apparatus can be used in particular for supplying power to apparatuses for surface heat-treatment with the aid of a glow discharge, since, in this case, operations are always carried out slightly below the arc discharge. <IMAGE>
