<p>The installation comprises a basin sunk into the ground and lined with concrete, asphalt, etc. It has a central decantation chamber partitioned from a surrounding, concentric annular chamber for aeration which, in turn, is partitioned from a surrounding, post clarification area. In plan view, the basin presents a contour which is egg-shaped; the inlet end of the basin is a semi-circle concentric with the decantation chamber and the outlet end is exgended with gently curved sides merging with a radiused tip. Pref. the decantation chamber is formed as a funnel with conically tapering sides. Cylindrical partitions bounding the annular, aeration chamber are pref. built up of interlocking, profiled sections of synthetic plastic, partic. PVC extrusions. The oval-shaped surfaces increases the area in contact with atmos. The outlet end sides are easier to construct and maintain than the semicircular end sides. For a given treatment capacity, it is frequently easier to accommodate a longer, narrower basin that a circular one.</p> |
