The drive assembly is for a device for climbing up or down masts, tree trunks, chimneys or columns, for repair work, bark and branch stripping, or other purposes. It incorporates at least one drive roller (1), or continuous track, with a series of vertically extending wedge-shaped projections (3) on its running surface. These bear knife edges (4) aligned across the line of the mast. The spacing between these can be such that the stem remaining between two successive projections engaging the mast suffices to bear the climbing device and personnel. There may be a number of such rollers or tracks following each other. Ascent and descent can be safely negotiated even under heavy or uneven loading.
