Multilayer optical waveguide - produced by flame hydrolysis of doped silicon compound on half substrate rod periphery and wire drawing

A multi-layer optical waveguide for use in broadband in formation transmission systems for light signals is produced by depositing the optically active layers on the surface of an optically inactive substrate such as a cylindrical rod. The optically active layers cover half of the rod periphery. In a final drawing operation, the cross-section is reduced and an optical light guide fibre is produced. This is a simple and inexpensive process for the mfr. of optical light guides with a very low attenuation. The plateau in the refractive index curve in the centre in the case of concentrically coated rods and the occurrence of a minimum in the case of internally coated tubes have been eliminated.
