The invention comprises condensation polymers which are phosphates of compounds containing at least two phenolic hydroxy groups in the molecule (but not dihydroxy compounds in which the two hydroxy groups are in o-position to one another) and possessing one of the following general formulae:- <FORM:0700761/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0700761/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0700761/IV (b)/3> <FORM:0700761/IV (b)/4> (wherein X represents hydrogen or a hydroxy group, Y, Z, U1 and U11 represent hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy groups or hydrogen, not more than one of each pair being hydrogen, and V represents a hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy group), and the manufacture thereof by dissolving the parent compounds in an anhydrous solvent capable of binding hydrogen chloride (e.g. pyridine or quinoline), adding phosphorus oxychloride, allowing the mixture to stand at low to normal temperature, then pouring into water and isolating the hydrolysis product obtained. The products, which are mostly soluble in dilute alkali and in some cases also in water, have an anti-enzymatic effect on alkaline phosphatase and hyaluronidase. They are polymerized to an extent depending on the reaction time, and the more highly polymerized ones may subsequently be split by hydrolysis. Examples describe the phosphorylation of: (1), (6) and (7), phloretin; (2) 4 : 21 : 41 : 61-tetrahydroxychalcone; (3) hesperetin; (4) 4 : 21 : 41-trihydroxychalcone; (5) quercetin; (8) naringenin; (9) 3 : 21 : 41 : 61-tetrahydroxy-4-methoxychalcone; (10) 4 : 21 : 41-trihydroxy-3-methoxychalcone; (11) and (12) 21- and 4-methylphloretin. Acyl groups which may be present in acyloxy substituents are benzoyl, carbalkoxy, and carboaralkoxy such as carbobenzyloxy. |
