1490440 Preparing polymer latices EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 30 May 1975 [28 June 1974] 23621/75 Heading C3P A process for preparing latices from organic water immiscible volatile liquid cements or dispersions of organic water insoluble polymers comprises preparing an aqueous emulsion of the cement or dispersion having dispersed particles of precursor latex size, stripping the liquid from the latex particles by creating an aerosol in a moving gas flow comprising steam as the initial continuous phase and then separating out the latex particles by impinging the latex particles on a flow of latex in a separating zone at reduced pressure, cooling and condensing the vapours from the separating zone, separating liquid from liquid-containing water which is vaporized to provide at least part of said moving gas flow. Recovered water may be vaporized in a vaporizer from which accumulations of polymer may be periodically removed by flushing with separated solvent, and two such vaporizers may be used in alternation. Withdrawn latex may be concentrated and water vaporized therefrom combined with vapour from the separation step, or condensed and combined with the separated solvent-containing water. The solvent-containing water may be filtered before vaporization, and accumulations of polymer on the filter may be periodically removed by flushing with separated solvent. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated.
