The solubility and rate of dissolution of 1-hydroxy-1'-hydroperoxy-dicyclohexyl peroxide (I) in organic liquids is increased by carrying out the dissolution in the presence of wate and alkali and/or ammonium salts of 1-18C monocarboxylic acids or 2-9C dicarboxylic acids. Solns. of the (I) in solvents such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nitrocellulose, glycol ethers, toluene, xylene, etc. are used in the furniture industry to pretreat wood, which is later coated with a layer of an accelerated unsatd. polyester resin coating compsn. which cures due to the action of the (I) present on the wood to give a hard lacquer film. For safety reasons, the (I) is generally supplied as a phlegmatised white powder contg. >=10 wt. % water, in which form it dissolved only slowly in the solvents. The presence of e.g. 0.1-1 wt. % (on (I)) of a salt such as potassium acetate, ammonium butyrate, ammonium laurate, etc., now increases the rate of dissolution and gives stable, ppte. free solns. which can be sprayed onto the wood without stoppage of the spray nozzles.
|
