TWO STAGE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The main in line shafts are connected to one another at normal operating conditions so that transmission noise is avoided. The two step four speed drive has an auxillary shaft in each stage which lies at a distance from the main shaft centreline. A third main shaft is mounted in line between input and output shafts. A chain drive of the first stage connects the input shaft to the third main shaft via its auxiliary shaft. A drive of the second stage connects the third main shaft to the output shaft via the auxiliary shaft of the second stage. A first centrifugal coupling bridges the input shaft and the third main shaft so that above a predetermined speed of rotation these shafts are coupled directly. A freewheel coupling in the first stage disconnects this drive above a certain speed.
