<p>An engine exhaust gas purifier includes a cylindrical casing with coaxial inlet and outlet fittings projecting through end plates of the casing, the inlet fitting terminating within a swirl generator located in the casing while the outlet fitting terminates adjacent a larger-dia. coaxial guide tube projecting through an annular partition which is located in the casing in spaced relation to the downstream end plate and which includes a port bypassing the guide tube. In use, gases entering the swirl generator are constrained to flow outwards between swirl-inducing vanes and then flow in a helical pattern along the casing so that particles entrained in the gases migrate towards the interior surface of the casing and pass through the port to accumulate in an annular space around the inner end of the outlet fitting where any remaining sparks are finally extinguished and particles are abraded before becoming re-entrained in the bulk of the gases which pass through the guide tube into the outlet fitting.</p> |
