Cross-linkable phenolic resins comprise the reaction prod. of a mixt. of trihydroxydiphenyl (THDP) isomers with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrylaldehyde or glyoxal at a molar ratio of 2:1 to 1:2, reaction is effected in slightly acid medium at room temp. in the presence of (in)organic acids, alkali hydroxides or oxides of bi- and tri-valent metals (esp. Mg, Ca, or Al oxide or chloride.) The resins are used with practically e.g. wood powder or ships, talc, cements, silica sand, natural soils, mineral fibres to produce more or less homogeneous inert blocks of material of high mechanical resistance and impermeability. They harden in the cold in absence of either hardening agents or catalysts. Uses include the prepn. of frames based on wood shavings, prodn. of rigid models in foundries and the formation of rigid blocks or agglomerates in the construction industry. They can be injected into unstable ground to consolidate it.
|
