Fermentation of organic waste, household refuse, sewage, etc. - in anaerobic digester cells producing methane gas

The waste is fermented to produce a mixt. of gases esp. contg. CH4 and H2. Metal and glass pieces are sepd. from the household refuse which is then finely ground and mixed with organic waste. The mixt. is then pref. spread into digester cells in which the temp. and anerobic conditions can be controlled as fermentation takes place. In each digester cell ambient air can first be injected and then replaced with CO2 under pressure which is used to agitate the mixt., and to serve as an initial substrate for microorganisms. During fermentation, an additional substrate is pref. introduced in the form of bacteria in injected sludge. Fermentation is pref. effected progressively in >=3 digester cells in series with gravity transfer from one cell to the next. Prod. of the final cell is pref. recycled to the first to re-inject seeding bacteria.
