The pump for handling fluids with solid admixtures is fitted with a floating seal which resists the abrasive action of solid particles. The pump (1) has a split case, and between low press. and high press. chambers, a baffle on the casing has a shoulder on the high press. end. In this section the shaft is fitted with sleeve (14) which rotates together with the shaft and on the sleeve a floating set of T-cross section ring (16) are fitted. If during the operation solid particles clog up gap between the inner surface of ring (16) and sleeve (14), the two parts start rotating together. As only the first of the set of rings becomes affected in this way the rest of the set is still loose and a relative rotary movement between the first ring and the rest follows, so that sleeve is protected from abrasive effect of solid particles and overall wear of set of rings too is reduced.
