1376751 Extruding variegated soap COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 19 Jan 1972 [23 Jan 1971] 2559/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] A variegated extruded bar of a soap, based on various -specified fatty acids and/or synthetic soaps, comprises contrastingly coloured soaps yielding in a rounded ended tablet pressed from the bar, either a marbled effect 115, 121, Fig. 5, or a striped effect 123, 125, Fig. 8. The bar is extruded from an orifice 89, Fig. 2, to which the soaps 65, 47, are delivered from an extrusion head chamber 79 into which each soap is discharged from a separate series of outlets 77 and 83 at the downstream end of a member 51. The member 51 is attached, at a bayonet coupling 57, 59, to an extruder 43 from which the soap 65 is delivered to the outlets 77 by tubes 69 extending through the member 51, and the soap 47 is delivered by an extruder 13 connecting with the member 51 at a transverse lower, or upper, or side inlet 49 and communicating around the tubes 69 with the outlets 83. The marbled effect of Fig. 5, is produced by blades 87, rotated by the screw of extruder 43, which act to cut and transversely displace and mix the soap strands issuing from the outlets of outlets 77 and 83, and the effect may be enhanced by a further member within the chamber 79 which may comprise an impeller 95 rotated by the screw of extruder 43, or a similar freely rotatable member, or a stationary member having radially directed passages. The variegated effect may be enhanced by means 99, which removes, by scraping, the outer surface of the extruded bar. The extruders 13 and 43 are preferably connected to vacuum, are of variable speed, may be single or double barrelled, and are provided with jackets for heating or cooling water. The extrusion outlet 89 may also be heated or cooled, and the member 51 is also provided with a jacket 52 for heating or cooling water or oil. In the described apparatus the extruder 43 is gravitationally fed at a vacuum inlet with soap by a further extruder, and the extruder 13 is gravitationally fed with soap of a different colour cut by rotary knives at the extrusion orifices of a further extruder, to the feed hopper whereof a dye solution or aqueous pigment dispersion is added to the soap, from the valved outlet of a tank containing a stirrer. Each soap may be multi-coloured and both soaps may be of a colour different from white. The particular examples relate to white soap with green, blue, red, or pink marbelising or stripes. |
