1414287 1,3-Dlchloro-2-butene E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 20 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 12409/74 Heading C2C 1,3-Dichloro-2-butene is produced continuously by reacting 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene with an aqueous solution containing HCl and 15-24 wt. per cent of CuCl 2 at 15-35‹ C. and maintaining the concentration of HCl in the solution at a level of at least 29 wt. per cent of the aqueous solution and the volume ratio of aqueous solution to 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene is greater than 12 : 1. The reaction is preferably conducted at superatmospheric pressure, e.g. at 15 p.s.i.g. above atmospheric pressure with an HCl concentration of 30-32 wt. per cent and volume ratio of 16 : 1 to 22 : 1 at 20-30‹ C.
