<p>1432677 Inking apparatus DAHLGREN MFG CO 18 April 1973 [9 May 1972] 18685/73 Heading B6C Apparatus for applying an ink film 13 of controlled thickness to a printing plate 15 on a cylinder 16 Fig. 15, comprises a resilientsurfaced applicator roller 12, and a hard-surfaced roller 14, the rollers 12 and 14 being urged together to indent the resilient roller and adjacent surfaces moving in opposite directions at the nip N; a reservoir 113 of ink is formed above the nip and doctor blade 136 is adjustable to provide a uniform film 14t of ink on the surface of roller 14 so that the surface 14s approaching the nip N is of uniform consistency to provide the wiping or metering action on roller 12. The metering roller 14 may include a chamber 14x through which coolant is circulated to regulate the temperature of the ink, Fig. 3 (not shown), and its surface is provided with microscopic hits and indentations to improve ink-receptivity. The thickness of film 13 can be varied by altering the pressure between rollers 12, 14 or by varying their relative speeds. A bar 144 which may be freely rotating or driven assists transfer of ink away from applicator roller 12 towards metering roller 14. In preferred embodiments dampening fluid is metered between a further pair of resilient and hard-surfaced rollers adjacent surfaces moving in the same direction to provide a metering action, and the resulting metered film being moved into engagement with the metered film of ink, so that a composite layer is applied to the plate 15. In Fig. 15, hard surfaced roller 202<SP>1</SP> co-operates with resilientsurfaced roller 204<SP>1</SP> to meter the fluid, which is then transferred by roller 204 and vibrator roller 203 to form a composite film 136 on roller 12.
