A roll e.g. for a rolling mill consists of a compacted powder work surface and metal core with a tubular metal element metallurgically bonded to at least the work surface. The roll or roller is used for shaping metal e.g. in a rolling mill. The roll which is subjected to thermal cycling is less likely to have cracks than cast or forged rolls. The tensile strength, fatigue strength and hardness are also high.
