A number of ingots are cast in a furnace comprising a main mould section, in direct open communication with a number of ingot mould sections having a total cross-sectional area less than the main mould section cross-sectional area, an electrode, and a conductor disposed outside the ingot mould sections. A pool of molten metal is formed in the main mould section and maintained by directing an electrical current through the electrode and conductor. Molten metal flows from the pool into the ingot mould sections and is prevented from freezing at the interface between the main mould section and the ingot mould sections. Current is prevented from entering the molten metal in the ingot mould sections. The method is used to cast a number of ingots from a pool of molten metal without the formation of deep molten metal cores in the ingots. Ingots of satisfactory metallurgical quality can be cast at increased solidification rates, resulting in more efficient furnace utilization and decreased production costs.
|
