The mounting bracket for a roof rack has a flat oval base plate (10) with two holes and a rim. A springy pad (19) with lugs to engage in the plate makes the joint between the roof and the bracket and is contoured to fit the longitudinal roof rib (N). A vertical channel (11) joins the base plate to the side plate (12) which has holes (17) to receive the lateral tubes (16) of the roof rack. A vertical cranked bar (14) hooks underneath the roof gutter (15) and is connected to the side plate by a threaded knob (13). As the knob is turned the whole bracket becomes more tightly clamped to the roof.
