The mechanism is for cutting cigars and a conveyor (2) transporting them (4) continuously sideways. A notched belt travels in synchronism with the conveyor, and two cutting tools (20) are provided, their blades extending into the notches in the belt. The tools can be two circular knives, mounted one after the other and inclined to each other at an angle whose apex coincides with the belt notch, being driven in the opposite direction to the belt. The knives can work in conjunction with a sharpening mechanism, and there can be a thruster mechanism (14) running in synchronism with the conveyor, pushing the cigars into recesses in the notched belt in the area where the knives work.
