1489047 Electromagnetic shielding NCR CORP 18 Feb 1976 [5 March 1975] 6384/76 Heading H2E [Also in Division H1] In an enclosure 14 (Figs. 1, 2) for electrical equipment, comprising body member 10 and removable panel member 12, a conductive edge member of magnetic material is disposed round the periphery of an access or ventilating opening 22 to protect the edges and to magnetically attract a gasket 26. The enclosure includes an electromagnetic interference shield 24 comprising a conductive membrane of metal, e.g. copper foil on the faces of members 10, 12 to which edge member 20 is electrically connected; with gasket 26 bridging the discontinuity at the junction of members 10, 12. The gasket 26 (Fig. 3) comprises a permanent magnet strip core 28 of, e.g. flexible plastic material overlain by a compressible plastic, e.g. polyurethane foam strip 30 adhesively bonded thereto. A flexible metal, e.g. copper foil strip or mesh 36 is spirally wrapped about composite strip 34 to compress the foam into a resilient package which conforms to surface irregularities and supports the strip core 28. The gasket is bonded with conductive adhesive at areas 38 contiguous with the copper convolutions 36 to member 10 or 12 establishing contact with the shield 24, so that the face 40 of magnet core 28 is presented to magnetic edge member 20 in the opposed member so that the two members are retained together; the portions 42 of the strip 36 contacting edge member 20 to bridge the discontinuity of shield 24. Alternatively, the foam strip 30 is sandwiched (Fig. 5, not shown) between the magnet core and a strip of, e.g. copper foil and the outer surface of the strip may have an adhesive film for bonding to the enclosure.
