To prevent the formation of hydrogen when an electrolytic cell is short circuited, the flow of current in the circuit - galvanic anode/electrolyte/cathode, or in the case of a cell using an alkaline metal chloride, the flow in the galvanic circuit, anode/brine/cathode amalgam, is prevented simultaneously with the short circuiting of the cell.
