The ignition and operation of gas discharge lamps is enhanced by the use of a piezo-ceramic element to generate the HF voltage. The piezo-ceramic transformer (2) is coupled across the electrodes of the lamp (1) and is controlled by an electronic circuit. A tubular piezo ceramic section with pick-ups is coupled to form primary and secondary stages on the top and bottom sections respectively. The tube is made of lead-zirconium-titanium alloy and has a external diameter of 61 mm., internal diameter of 51 mm and a length of 30 cm.
