<p>Effluents (water or gases) contg. sulphurous cpds., esp. H2S, mercaptans, sulphides, SO2 and/or sulphites, are treated with an aqs. soln. of alkali(ne earth) metal chlorites at pH >9. A pref. combination is NaClO2 in KOH or NaOH. By working in alkaline media, problems associated with instability of the washing liquid are overcome as well as the tendency to form dangerous cpds. The medium affords a large buffer capacity so that the plant operates without extensive regulating and measuring auxiliaries, esp. useful with smaller units. At pH = 11.5, the efficienty is high enough to remove completely all noxious substances and/or require a very short dwell time.</p> |
