The control device for clamping chuck ensures that a workpiece intended to be clamped is in fact clamped. The chuck actuating cylinder has arrangement for controlling several positions of the clamping piston of this cylinder, and is designed for reliable clamping of the workpiece. The positions of the piston (6) of the clamping cylinder are monitored together with cylinder pressure to sense the reaching of clamping position. A control signal is generated when the clamping position is reached and when the other piston position is not reached. The clamping position is sensed after piston has covered half the full travel.
