<p>A shaft furnace for use as high-temp. oxygen/refuse converter has in the top section a drying zone which is divided by a thermal decomposition zone from the bottom combustion chamber. The shaft tapers from the decomposition zone to its smallest section in the combustion chamber. The cross-sectional areas of the shaft at the level of the refuse bed and of the tap hole for the fused discharge are specified by empirical formulas: (i) B=R(0.0174 + 0.002355 (100-)/P) where B is the cross-sectional area of the shaft in m2, P is the % oxygen in the gas used and R is the waste throughput amt. in t/day; and (ii) C=0.025 RX where C is the cross-sectional area of the tap hole in cm2 and X is proportion (%) of metal, glass, ash and similar high melting materials in the waste. This converter can process a wide range of waste prods. into useful gaseous fuels and inert residues. It can be operated at higher pressures and produces continuously cool gas and fused slag.</p> |
