The reciprocating engine with a rotating piston functioning as a sleeve valve is generally as set out in Patent Application P 25 28 122.5, with a right-angle drive from a toothed wheel on the crankpin to another on the connecting rod (8) causing the piston rotation. This brings a port in the piston in line with others in the casing as necessary to permit the cycle gas flow; rotation rate and casing port position vary with the cycle (2-stroke or 4-stroke). The piston (1) is now-cup shaped to reduce thermal stresses; the cylinder head underside has a corresponding projection (32). Both have similarly tapering sides. The opening connecting combustion chamber (33) and casing gas passages is now a short radial duct (20a) in the piston cup wall. Piston rings are not needed as the cup/cylinder head walls seal the combustion chamber.
