A chimney (11) rises above a combustion chamber (13). The flue gases flow from the top of the combustion chamber through a down passage (14) into a side chamber (16) which can be filled with large coarse stones. From this they enter the chimney. A vertical shaft (19) is supported in bearings (18) at the base and top of the chimney. It carries a series of turbine discs (24) each of which has a number of propeller blades (22). The rising flue gases put these into rotation so that the excess draught can be usefully employed instead of having to be throttled. The turbine discs also carry Pelton wheel buckets (26) which are turned by steam injected from steam raising coils above the fire in the combustion chamber.
