The insulator for high voltage switch gear etc consists of cured cast or impregnated insulating material, in which are embedded stiffening inserts in the form of meshes, tissues or felts of hard fibres. One insert (5), closely adjacent the outer component surface (4) is formed by a cotton web. In production the cotton web insert is wound round the stiffening inserts (3), prior to their embedding in castable material, or impregnating. Then the assembly together with the stiffening inserts is immersed in the appropriate insulating material (2). Glass fibres or special hard fibres are used for the manufacture of the inserts.
