1421872 Aqueous ethylene terpolymer hydrosol dispersions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972] 50150/73 Heading C3P Aqueous ethylene terpolymer hydrosol dispersions comprising (1) a terpolymer of 55 to 80 weight per cent of ethylene, 10 to 42 weight per cent of ester monomer free from carboxylic acid or anhydride groups and 3 to 10 weight per cent of α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative thereof containing at least one carboxylic acid or anhydride group, (2) 5 to 50 weight per cent, based on the terpolymer of a high molecular weight acid of rosin, rosin derivative or fatty acid having an acid number of at least 50, (3) an alkali metal hydroxide in amount equivalent to 10 to 100% of the acid groups in (1) and (2), and (4) an amine base having a dissociation constant of at least 1 x 10-8 in an amount equivalent to 0 to 300% of the acid groups in (1) and (2), the total amount of (3) and (4) being sufficient to neutralize at least 50% of the acid groups in (1) and (2) and the dispersion having a solids content of 2 to 35 weight per cent, may be prepared by heating the components at 55‹ to 140‹ C. with agitation for sufficient time to convert the mixture to an aqueous hydrosol dispersion. The ester monomer may be a vinyl or allyl alkanoate, alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or dialkyl maleate or fumarate. The acid monomer may be acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, fumaric, maleic, itaconic or aconitic acid, maleic or itaconic anhydride, or an alkyl hydrogen maleate or fumarate. The high molecular weight acid may be derived from rosin or hydrogenated, dehydrogenated or polymerized rosin, or tall oil, or may be lauric, myristic, pentadecanoic, palmitic, margaric, stearic, myristoleic, palmitoleic, oleic, linoleic or linolenic acid. The alkali metal hydroxide may be sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxide. The base may be ammonia, a mono-, di- or trialkylamine or alkanolamine, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine or morpholine. Examples describe the preparation of dispersions from ethylene/vinyl acetate/mathacrylic acid terpolymers, ammonium hydroxide and (1) wood rosin dimer and sodium hydroxide, (2, 3, 7, 8, and 13) hydrogenated wood rosin and sodium hydroxide, (4) hydrogenated wood rosin and potassium hydroxide and (6) oleic acid and sodium hydroxide; and from hydrogenated wood rosin, sodium and ammonium hydroxides and terpolymers of ethylene and methacrylic acid with (9) methyl methacrylate or (10-12) isobutyl acrylate, and a terpolymer of ethylene with (14) vinyl acetate and acrylic acid.
