The machine comprises a punch (10) mounted in a sliding block (11) which slides vertically in the machine's framework and is operated by an electric motor. A rivet magazine (13) feeds rivets via a guide bar (16) to the rivet holder (12) and is operated by a hydraulic jack (17) and piston rod (18). The rivet holder can be moved independently from the punch, either to a position of rest in which case a safety device will not allow the punch to be operated, or to the working position. The safety device also ensures that rivets cannot be fed from the magazine unless the rivet holder is in its working position.
