The fire has a rectangular hollow base piece. A gas pipe opens into one side of the base through an aerating jet. The top of the base piece has a number of holes through which the gas air mixture flows at the correct speed to form a stable flame above the top. A structure over the top of the base gives the appearance of solid fuel. It is formed of expanded ceramic with an open cellular structure. This material is arranged in lumps resembling coal or coke but with hollow interiors. The burning fuel rises through the hollow spaces and through the cellular structure and thus brings the whole of the imitation solid fuel to red heat.
