Internally cooled continuous casting roll - with metal sleeve gripping roll body and blocked by abutments

The roll has an outer sleeve mounted between two axial abutments integral with the body of the roll. The sleeve which is made of a metal with a high YS (elastic limit) and which has a thickness of approx. 10% of the dia. of the body and a length of ca. 80% of the distance between the journal bearings grips the body along at least part of its length with a cold fit sufficient to allow transmission of the drive torque of the roll to the sleeve and to leave when heated a residual tightness. The axial abutments are positioned in contact with the ends of the sleeve without gripping nor allowing any clearance when cold so that each end of the sleeve is immobile w.r.t. the cylindrical body of the roll in the gripping zone. Since a high YS metal is used for the sleeve the thermal and mechanical stress do not result in plastic deformation of the sleeve. As the sleeve is not deformed fluid tightness is ensured and there is no loss of coolant. No welding is necessary and difficulty weldable materials can be combined.
