The testing appliance is for the quality control of workpiece surfaces. It contains a feeler- and converter unit, which produces electrical signals corresponding to the condition of scanned surface areas. A comparator compares the signals with a limit value signal. A counter produces a positive or negative result signal for the tested area, depending upon the comparative signals. An intermediate counter (20) and switch unit (16-19) controlled by it, are positioned between the comparator (14) and the counter (22). Intermediate counter and switch unit transmit to the counter negative comparative signals to form a negative result signal, of only those surface irregularities, the number of which during scanning in an uninterrupted sequence of subsequent negative comparative signals are below a certain limit value.
